A rusted chain wrapped around the skeleton’s neck ended in a silver medallion with a black stone at its center. A glimpse of the stone sent a wave of nausea over my gut like I’d just gargled and swallowed a shot of cheap tequila. I thought I’d heave, but when the skeleton’s jaws clicked together and its hollowed-out eye sockets faced us, the discomfort was all but forgotten as my adrenals took over.

Adrenals. In a game world.

The temperature of the room plummeted, and a shiver ran down my spine. When I raised my bow, it was like my arms were seized by arthritis. I took two quick steps backward to create space. I tried to yank an arrow out of my quiver, but it rattled to the floor for my shaking hands.

Strap your quiver somewhere else!

Raising her scepter into the air, Roshan bellowed, “Back into the abyss with you!” A blinding white glow filled the room, and the skeleton raised its bony arm to cover its eye sockets as it cowered. Though the light was intensely bright, it caused no discomfort to my eyes. Instead, it cast the same warmth over me as Roshan’s earlier heals, delivering temporary relief from the violent chill of the cold.

Her voice took on an air of command as she barked an order. “Do not just stand there, adventurer! Attack it!”

Ripping another arrow from the wooden sleeve, I nocked it to the string and fired. It impacted the hand the skeleton used to shield itself from the glare. The hand snapped back into the skull and a finger dislodged. The digit rattled to the floor as the skeleton lumbered toward me, quickly closing the distance. At this proximity, I had no time to pull another arrow. So it came down to a choice and I had to make it fast.

Rapier or daggers?

Either way, I’d face a thirty-second cool down of my abilities, leaving my damage greatly diminished. But the rapier would allow me a longer reach and I might be able to keep the skeleton at bay. Dropping my bow, I unsheathed my narrow sword and dodged to the side as the skeleton lunged forward and aimed a bony fist at me.

I swung the rapier. Though it connected, it bounced harmlessly off the undead’s shoulder, leaving only a crease in its wake.

The skeleton reached into a ratty leather belt and withdrew his own sword from its tattered scabbard. I answered my own fleeting question about the origin of the sword—it'd been hidden in the pile of bones. What mattered more was the undead bastard was swinging it at me!

I blocked with my rapier, but when the blades met between us, the skeleton proved much stronger. He forced his weapon down on mine until the blade sliced into my cheek.

My blood spurted into the air as the incredible pain of sliced nerves radiated through my face.

Dwarf Skeleton uses Overpower.

Critical hit!
